The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics is offering a postdoctoral
staff position in the field of language comprehension. It is a research
position and involves no teaching responsibilities; furthermore,
considerable technical support is available. The position will be
available from the beginning of 2007 and has a term of appointment of 3 years.

Research at the institute in the area of language comprehension is centred
on two main projects: 'Decoding continuous speech' and 'Phonological
learning for speech perception' (see recent Annual Reports on the MPI
website). The research includes strong components of cross-linguistic
comparison and computational modelling. Current members of the group have
primary research interests in infants' development of language and word
perception, in adult processing of spoken language in native and non-native
languages, and in lexical structure and representation. There is research
in progress on a variety of topics in phonetic perception, the processing
of suprasegmental structure, the recognition of word forms (including
bilingual lexical access) and the segmentation of continuous speech.

We are looking for an experimental scientist with a background in
psycholinguistics or phonetics who is interested in undertaking research in
any of the above areas. An ability to work collaboratively in an
interdisciplinary team is a plus, and an important criterion is a
demonstrated ability to publish research findings. Note that the
environmental language for research purposes is Dutch; knowledge of Dutch
would certainly prove useful.

Young scientists with a completed Ph.D. in a relevant field are encouraged
to apply. Applications should include a c.v. and the names of two referees
who would be willing to write letters of recommendation; examples of
published work and a cover letter describing research interests would also
be helpful.
