Description:

The American Sign Language Program at the University of Virginia invites
applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor position in ASL and
Deaf Studies.  Applicants may work in Anthropology, History, Linguistics,
Philosophy, Psychology, or a similar field.  Appointments will be joint
between ASL and an appropriate department.  The teaching load is four
courses per year; candidates should be prepared to teach advanced ASL
language and Deaf Studies courses as well as classes in their general
fields.  The successful candidate will be expected to enhance the
University's growing ASL Program, contribute to their home department, and
perform appropriate university, professional, and community service.

Qualifications:

An earned doctorate in hand by August of 2007 and native or near-native ASL
skills.  Demonstrated theoretical or interdisciplinary interests, as well
as evidence of scholarly potential and/or accomplishment, are desirable. 
Candidates should be familiar with current Deaf Studies scholarship and
have extensive experience with the Deaf community.  Experience teaching ASL
on the college level, familiarity with VISTA Signing Naturally curriculum,
and American Sign Language Teaching Association (ASLTA) certification
preferred.

The position will begin in August of 2007.  To ensure full consideration,
