Linguistic Field(s): General Linguistics

Call Deadline: 14-Nov-2006

Meeting Description:

The purpose of this event is to discuss the properties of the language faculty from a biolinguistic perspective; bringing together biologists, neuroscientists, and linguists, for three days of conference. The conference aims at exploring further the three factors that according to Chomsky (2005) enter into the growth of language in the individual: the genetic endowment, experience, and language (or organism) independent principles of efficient computation and the like. Important information about the conference will be posted shortly at www.biolinguistics.uqam.ca.

Description:

The purpose of this event is to discuss the properties of the language faculty from a biolinguistic perspective; bringing together biologists, neuroscientists, and linguists, for three days of conference. The conference aims at exploring further the three factors that according to Chomsky (2005) enter into the growth of language in the individual: the genetic endowment, experience, and language (or organism) independent principles of efficient computation and the like. Important information about the conference will be posted shortly at www.biolinguistics.uqam.ca.

Call for Papers:

In addition to the invited talks, a small number of papers will be accepted for presentation at the conference. We invite submissions for thirty minutes talks (20 minutes for presentation plus 10 minutes for questions) on research focusing on any of these three factors that enter into language growth. Papers focusing on the third factor, that is, on how language independent principles can explain key properties of language, are especially encouraged to apply. Also encouraged to apply are papers explicitly dealing with the genetics or biology of language. A representative, but not exhaustive, list of topics for potential papers include the following:
--The architectural constraints that determine and limit possible attainable languages (Linguistic variation and evolution);
--Language and language independent principles determining language growth (Language Acquisition);
--The role of efficient computation in the satisfaction of interface conditions;
--How language independent principles manifest themselves in the interface conditions.

Submission guidelines:

Please submit a one-page abstract, 12 pt. font, single-line spacing, and an additional page for examples and references to:
Biolinguistic Investigations Conference Committee

Send abstract by e-mail to: di_sciullo.anne-marie at uqam.ca and carbon-copy it
to calixto at alum.mit.edu. Abstracts should be attached as Word or PDF files.

Important dates:
Submission Deadline: November 14, 2006.

>From Oral Corpora to Phonological Theories: The Case of French. (le français suit)

The primary objective of this conference is to explore the contribution of corpus research (spontaneous speech, monitored speech) to the advancement of contemporary phonological theories. Contributions on issues of French in contact with other languages are welcome as are any proposals on the phonetic description of French. This conference is part of the ongoing research activities of the international research project Phonologie du français contemporain (PFC).
