Meeting Description:

The Centre for English Language Communication (CELC), National University of Singapore invites colleagues from all over the world to participate in an international symposium for English language teachers. This symposium will combine classroom-based research paper presentations with small group discussions to give presenters and participants an enriching professional development experience.

Theme:

The English Language Teaching and Learning Landscape: Continuity, Innovation and Diversity. 

Topic Areas:

- Language learning and teaching in the age of information technology;
- Intercultural communication in the English language classroom;
- Integrating critical and creative thinking and English language teaching;
- Assessment and evaluation;
- Teaching methodology for the future;
- Local versus global materials for English language teaching;
- Learner autonomy and English language learning;
- Classroom management;
- English for specific purposes;
- The impact of language policies on the English language classroom.

Presentations:

Parallel Papers:
These are lecture presentations to a formal audience lasting thirty minutes plus ten minutes for questions. 

Workshops:
These are 90-minute hands-on sessions during which the participants are engaged in a series of carefully structured activities. 

Procedure for Submission of Abstracts:

A 150-250 word abstract with a title not exceeding 12 words and a 50-word biodata should be sent to the Secretariat no later than 6 October 2006. Please fill in the proposal form (available from the symposium website: www.nus.edu.sg/celc/symposium) and post, email or fax it to us. 

The Secretariat will inform proposers by 15 January 2007 whether their abstracts have been accepted. The Secretariat reserves the right to decline abstracts without assigning reasons.

This workshop welcomes papers on Learning Strategies and Teaching Strategies for Autonomy. Papers will be selected on the basis of abstracts submitted. The official language of the Workshop is English. 

The workshop will be hosted by the 18th International Symposium on Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, at the Department of Theoretical and Applied Linguistics, School of English, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, on May 4-6, 2007. All workshop participants are welcome to join the academic and social programme of the Symposium  (http://www.enl.auth.gr/symposium18). 

Abstracts should be submitted in pdf format. MSWord is acceptable if the abstract contains no special fonts. Only electronic submissions will be considered. Abstracts should be anonymous and 300-500 words long. 

Please send your submission to: strategies at enl.auth.gr. 

Send all your information - Name, Affiliation, and Title of the paper - in the body of the message and attach the abstract without name and affiliation. 
Presentations will be 20 minutes long, followed by a 10-minute discussion. 
More information on registration, accommodation, invited speakers, etc. will appear on the conference website as it becomes available.
