Sociolinguistics

Subject Language(s): English (eng)

Meeting Description:

Humour presents itself in a myriad of ways in all the media: the cinema,
theatre, television, DVD, VHS, newspapers, magazines and more recently, the
World Wide Web. All are huge receptacles of humour, be it voluntary or
involuntary. And today, the subject of humour in the media has become especially
relevant following a series of controversies such as the issue of the Danish
cartoons and the negative reaction of the Vatican following parodies of the Pope
in the Italian media. The aim of this workshop is to explore and examine
different facets of the humour in the media, ranging from theoretical problems,
the issue of global humour and current problems, with particular reference to
whether and, if so, how humour travels and is perceived cross-culturally by
audiences.

Fake News, Controversial Humor and the Media
Looks at a number of media-driven humor events from the global conflict that
resulted from the distribution of the now-(in)famous Danish cartoons to the
popularity of fake-news comic characters (including Borat, Stephen Colbert, and
Jon Stewart) and Web sites (such as The Onion, ScrappleFace.com, and The White
House.org). The focus will be on recent, even current, eruptions of joke and
antijoke response in the US, including Dave Chappelle's decision not to return
to do a third season for Comedy Central, the racist rant of Michael (Kramer)
Richards in a Los Angeles comedy club, and the debuting of Fox News's comedy
show, ''The ½ Hour News Hour.'' In addition to questions about the social
functions of humor, workshop participants will be encouraged to think about the
role media, especially new media, play as both a subject of and a platform for
these events. In addition to discussing provocative humor, participants will
work in small groups on writing fake-news stories.

Saturday May 26th 2007

9.30 - 12.30

Workshop III

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
