We invite papers representing the current state of research in the status of
discourse functional awareness in its source field of linguistic pragmatics, as
well as its impact on the fields of translation and foreign language teaching

First Circular and Call for Papers

Conference Theme

The organizers encourage papers representing the current state of research in
the status of discourse functional awareness in its source field of linguistic
pragmatics, as well as its impact on the fields of translation and foreign
language teaching (FLT). Participants are invited to prepare 20-minute
presentations (to be followed by 10-minute discussion time) on or related to one
of the following topics:

-- Discourse functional and pragmatic analysis of social communication
(ideology; language of politics and the media; advertising; misunderstandings;
humor, etc.)
-- Status of functional linguistics in relation to such disciplines as
sociolinguistics, anthropology, social psychology, cognitive linguistics and
culture studies
-- Methodology of discourse studies and organization of the parameters of analysis
-- Corpus selection in large or heterogeneous discourses
-- Discourse meaning in translation/interpreting from the perspective of
cognitive sciences, corpus linguistics, lexicology and semantics
-- Functional equivalence in translation/interpreting
-- Pragmatics of the translation/interpretation of the media, legal, political,
scientific and business language
-- General ways of implementation of the pragmatic and discourse functional
awareness in FLT, including on-line courses
-- Instruction in speech act comprehension
-- Developing teaching materials for function-focused L2 instruction
NB: The list of topics is not exhaustive

Plenaries

The organizers invited a number of leading specialists in the area of linguistic
pragmatics, functional linguistics, translation studies and FLT, some of whom
have already confirmed their participation. Details will be announced in the 2nd
circular.

Papers

The conference language is English. Participants intending to give a paper are
requested to send a 200-300 word abstract by e-mail to both of the following
addresses: violahale at autograf.pl and strus_pl at yahoo.com. The abstract should
include name and the academic title, academic affiliation, e-mail address and a
postal address. Deadline for the submission of abstracts is 30 April, 2008.
Notification of acceptance will be sent by 31 May, 2008. Conference papers will
be refereed and published with an international publisher. Participants without
a paper are asked to e-mail their name and academic affiliation.

Registration Costs

Conference fee is 100 Euros. Accommodation and full board in the Conference
Center, including a buffet dinner party is 250 Euros. Participants from Poland,
East European countries and countries with severe currency restrictions will be
offered reduced fees of 50 Euros (200 PLN, conference fee) and 125 Euros (500
PLN, accommodation and board). Please note that accommodation and full board
cover a two-night stay (24th-25th, 25th-26th October, breakfast included) plus
the following meals: lunch and supper on the 24th, lunch and buffet dinner on
the 25th and lunch on the 26th. Participants will be additionally charged for
extra nights according to the following tariff: 60 Euros for each additional
night (breakfast included) plus 15 Euros for each additional meal (lunch or
supper). Participants from Poland, East European countries and countries with
severe currency restrictions will be given a 50% discount. All participants are
requested to make a calculated payment of the total cost of their participation
until 31 July, 2008 to the following bank account:

Participants wishing to stay more than two nights are requested to notify us by
e-mail of the exact dates not later than two weeks before all their fees are
transferred to our account.

The second circular, which will contain detailed information on the conference
venue, transportation, as well as a provisional program of the conference will
be e-mailed to the registered participants by 15 August, 2008. In the meantime,
prospective participants are encouraged to visit this Conference Webpage, which

(Linguistics, UC Santa Barbara), Kathy Escamilla (Education, University of
Colorado), and Crispin Thurlow (Communication, University of Washington).

The program in Culture, Language and Social Practice (CLASP) at the University
of Colorado at Boulder is pleased to invite submissions to its first graduate
student-run interdisciplinary conference. Abstracts for 20 minute papers
covering topics in various areas of sociocultural linguistics are invited for
either the General Session or the Theme Session (see below) and are due by April
15, 2007. For both Sessions, we encourage papers that focus on the broad
connections between language, culture and society and are grounded in empirical
research. Examples of possible frameworks or analytic traditions for either
Session may include, but are not limited to:

Sociolinguistics
Linguistic anthropology
Narrative studies
Critical discourse analysis
Conversation analysis
Language and identity
Discourse pragmatics
Computer-mediated discourse
Ethnography of speaking
Language and literacy
Verbal art and performance
Bilingualism and code-switching
Language globalization
Intercultural communication
Language socialization

Conference Details:

The Friday of the conference will consist of workshops held by plenary speakers
and CLASP faculty, while Saturday and Sunday will be devoted to paper

Theme Session
Papers for the Theme Session should focus on a topic or issue dealing with
interdisciplinary approaches to doing research on language, society and culture.
Papers for consideration in the Theme Session may address issues dealing with
crossing (inter)discipinary boundaries in both theoretical and applied research.
Possible topics for the Theme Session might include: dialogues between
linguistic anthropology and sociolinguistics; the use of feminist and queer
conversation analysis; ethnographic approaches to doing critical discourse
analysis; etc.

Submission Guidelines
Please email a 500 word abstract to clasp.conference at gmail.com by April 15,
2007. The abstract should be attached in Microsoft Word (.doc) or Rich Text
(.rtf) format and should contain no information identifying the author(s) of the
paper. Abstracts are evaluated on an anonymous basis. In the body of the email,
please include the following information:

- Name(s) of author(s)
- University or other affiliation(s) of the author(s)
- Email address(es) of the author(s)
- Title of proposed paper
- Whether you'd like to be considered for the General or Themed session
- Equipment requirements
- Any additional comments
- 3-5 keywords describing the paper

Notification of acceptance or non-acceptance will be sent via email by August 1,
2007.
