The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Department: Centre for Language Technology

Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Spoken Language Dialog Systems

Description:

The Thinking Head Project, funded by a A$3.4M Australian Research
Council/National Health & Medical Research Council Special Initiative
Thinking Systems grant for 2006-2011, consists of a 15-person research team
made up of computer scientists, engineers, language technologists,
cognitive scientists, and performance artists from a number of universities
in Australia (the University of Western Sydney, Macquarie University,
Flinders University, and the University of Canberra, with involvement also
from Carnegie Mellon University, the Technical University of Denmark, and
Berlin University of Technology).

A four-year postdoctoral research fellowship position at Macquarie
University's Centre for Language Technology will focus on dialog management
and language generation aspects of the embodied conversational agent that
we aim to build. We seek someone who has experience either in the
development of sophisticated dialog systems or in spoken natural language
generation. The successful candidate will (a) contribute to the development
of the general framework and the design, implementation and integration of
various parts of the project, and (b) focus on specific aspects of dialog
management and utterance generation as appropriate to their particular
skills. Two areas of research we are particularly keen to explore are (a)
the process of negotiation and the handling of miscommunications; and (b)
the production of richly annotated output to drive a visually and aurally
compelling head. The appointee will be supervised by Professor Robert Dale,
and will work closely with the interdisciplinary team of engineers,
computer scientists and psychologists spread across the project sites.

Informal enquiries regarding the position can be directed to Robert Dale at
rdale at ics.mq.edu.au. Find out more about the Thinking Head project at

Technology at http://www.clt.mq.edu.au. Formal details regarding the

applications must be made via the University's Human Resources web site by
4th May 2007.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
