Description:

NFLC seeks two Faculty Research Assistants or Associates (title to be
determined according to credentials): one with a specialization in Arabic
and the other with a specialization in Chinese to provide expertise in the
teaching of these languages in a K-12 setting and/or in the training of
teachers for these languages for its STARTALK sponsored research project. 

DUTIES: Carry out research and development activities, alone and with
others, to assure that participating programs have access to best available
curricula, model lessons, and materials in planning and carrying out their
programs. Work with project members to identify data gathering priorities
for the STARTALK project in support of STARTALK database specifications.
Participate in planning for and carrying out a variety of meetings and
workshops for teachers and teacher trainers. Carry out, singly or as part
of a team, site visits to STARTALK programs, using a well-defined protocol.
Participate in data analysis and drafting of findings from first-year
implementation activities. Serve as a language resource for a wide range of
program activities, as needed. With other team members, review, evaluate
and edit materials in English and/or the target language to assure quality
prior to web-sharing . Serve on a team to provide ongoing technical
assistance to current and potential funded programs, teachers, and
administrators. Assume responsibility for oversight, planning and
monitoring of assigned aspects of the project to assure that the project
reaches its objectives.

QUALIFICATIONS: Required: MA in Chinese, Arabic, or a discipline related to
K-16 education, or language teaching; or MA in another field with
equivalent experience and training as a teacher of Chinese or Arabic. High
level of oral and written proficiency in Chinese or Arabic. Demonstrated
understanding of best practices in language teaching and in underlying
principles of teaching and learning, particularly language learning Highly
desirable: demonstrated effectiveness as a teacher in US K-12 settings.

STARTING SALARY: Salary is commensurate with experience
