Description:

Funds are available for MA/PhD studies starting in 2007 in a project aimed at 
documenting language change and variety in spoken Afrikaans.

The project is funded by SANPAD (South Africa-Netherlands Research Programme on
Alternatives in Development) and is conducted in collaboration with our research
partners at Rhodes University, the Meertens Institute (Netherlands) and
Stellenbosch University.

The project has funds for a full-time MA student and one PhD candidate starting
in January/February 2007 or any time thereafter. 

Funds include R20 000 for MA students and R35 000 for PhD candidates annually. 
Additional pro rata funds for fieldwork and conference travel etc are available
from the project and additional funds for PhD candidates (up to R70 000 annually
- about 9000EUR) can be obtained from the Rhodes University Humanities Faculty
(contact Dr De Vos for details). There are also opportunities for postdoctoral
researchers through National Research Foundation funds.  The call for
scholarships is open to all South African citizens. Postdoctoral candidates
wishing to apply for NRF funding can be of any nationality.

In addition to scholarship funding, researchers working on the project can be
nominated for training through the Research Capacity Initiative (RCI) run by
SANPAD. The RCI programme is arguably the best funded scholarship in South
Africa. Approximately USD 22,000 (R160 000) is spent on workshops and training
(excluding tuition) for students who have completed their Masters and are
embarking on a PhD. 

The project will focus on building networks in Afrikaans communities, often in
rural and marginalised areas, with special emphasis on non-standard varieties.
These communities are most at risk from underdevelopment and are affected by
urbanization and land-related issues amongst others. It is imperative to
document aspects of language change and dialectal variation.

The project has a number of avenues for MA, PhD, and postdoctoral research. These
include but are not limited to:

-  Morphological and syntactic aspects of varieties of Afrikaans
-  Language change in varieties of Afrikaans focusing on the language of younger
vs older speakers
-  The applicability of various fieldwork methodologies to the South African context
-  Discourses of poverty and underdevelopment
-  The effects of globalization, migration, and economic realities on Afrikaans
communities

Knowledge of Afrikaans or a West-Germanic language other than English would be
an advantage.
