Abstract:

Language and the City provides the first, comprehensive treatment of
language-city relationships, drawing upon research on the language in city
contexts from a global perspective, illustrated by examples from cities
worldwide. Diarmait Mac Giolla Chríost proposes a conceptual framework for
understanding language-city relationships through critical reference to the
relational perspective on the city and an ecological view of language. He
counters a 'simplistic biodiversity equals linguistic diversity'
formulation in identifying cities as significant sites of linguistic
diversity and innovation, as well as the sites of language change, language
shift and language death. In the field of language planning and policy,
this book addresses functions of the city in the interests of sustainable
linguistic diversity.
