The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Department: Linguistics
Web Address: http://www.ling.uni-potsdam.de

Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Discourse Structure

Description:

We have one half-time position for a researcher, available from February
1st, 2008, within the research group 'Applied Computational Linguistics'
led by Prof. Manfred Stede at the Institute for Linguistics, University of
Potsdam, Germany. The initial contract is for one year, but extension for
up to 6 years is possible; the position gives the opportunity for pursuing
a PhD.

The successful applicant will teach one course per semester in the
Computational Linguistics degree programs at Potsdam, and contribute to the
research activities on discourse structure and text document processing.
Ideal candidates have a strong background in Computational Linguistics /
Natural Language Processing, and research interests in theories of
discourse structure (coherence, coreference, etc.) and/or XML-based
document processing, text mining applications, etc. Good programming skills
(esp. scripting languages) and a keen interest in problem solving are
essential.

Candidates must hold a Master's or diploma degree by the start of the
appointment. Teaching can be done in English. Knowledge of German is not
necessary, but would be an advantage.

We offer
- a competitive salary with all benefits (German payscale 0.5 13 TV-L
(Ost), which is similar to the old BAT-IIa); actual salary depends on age,
marital status, children)
- a dynamic and international working environment (Computational
Linguistics is a growing part of Linguistics in Potsdam, which already is
one of the larger linguistics departments in Germany; there are also
established inter-disciplinary connections to e.g. computer science and
psychology)
- a nice (and affordable) living environment (Potsdam is a beautiful
mid-sized city just on the outskirts of Berlin, from where, if desired,
Potsdam is in easy commuting distance).

The position is open from February 1st, 2008, so candidates are encouraged
to get in touch with us ASAP.

To apply, please send
- a statement of research interests;
- a cv, including details of research experience;
- if applicable, (links to) sample publications; and
- addresses of at least two referees

to the university.
