Meeting Description

Meeting Clitics will take place during the Linguistic Institute in Barcelona.
All topics on clitics and its acquisition will be considered. 

Authors are invited to send one copy of a one-page abstract in English for
review. Presentations will be 20-minutes long plus 10 minutes for discussion.
Oral presentations will be in English. 

Please submit the abstract as an attachment in one of two formats: Microsoft
Word or RTF (Rich Text Format). In the body of the e-mail message include the
title, language, name, academic affiliation, current address, phone and fax
number, e-mail, and audiovisual requests. 

Indicate whether you want your abstract to be considered for the workshop Facing
Movement or Meeting Clitics, and whether you intend to attend the Linguistic
Institute. Authors may submit up to two abstracts, one individual and one joint. 

Abstracts should be submitted via e-mail to

Deadline for receipt of abstracts: March 1, 2008. 

Acceptance will be notified by April 1, 2008. 

Facing Movement will take place during the Linguistic Institute in Barcelona. 
This Summer School will provide a forum to discuss descriptive and theoretical
approaches to theoretical linguistics and psycholinguistics. The event will
offer a range of credit courses on the model of the Generative Linguistics of

Re-Constructing Meaning - Cognitive Linguistics in the Second Language Classroom

Language learning and teaching inspired by Cognitive Linguistics focuses mainly
on the systematic elements in language that have not been appropriately captured
by the pedagogical grammars which underlie current language teaching textbooks
and materials. Cognitive Linguistics may be able to provide a coherent, unified
account of how many lexical and grammatical constructions work, and how varying
uses of these forms are systematically related to one another. Thus, Cognitive
Linguistics may encourage more meaningful learning, giving insight into the
conceptual principles that may give rise to different forms and expressions.
Language is best learned in communicative contexts. Linguistic meaning is not
referential and objective, but subjective, dynamic, flexible, encyclopaedic, and
usage based. Since language is understood to reflect conceptualization, language
is all about meaning. Not only words and expressions but also the grammar of a
language reflects conceptualization and is therefore meaningful. Considering the
rise in number of new publications on Cognitive Linguistics as applied to
instructed L2 learning, we will organize a workshop on this topic at the 3rd
German Cognitive Linguistics Conference taking place at Leipzig/Germany, 25-27
September 08 (conference website: www.uni-leipzig.de/~gcla08). We would like to
share and discuss ideas and experiences and furthermore show that a Cognitive
Linguistic approach to language is in line with modern strands of
education-oriented applied linguistics and especially useful to second language
pedagogy.
We therefore invite researchers who are interested in this topic to submit
abstracts focussing on but not limited to the following areas in connection with
Cognitive Linguistics:

- grammar teaching
- metaphor theory
- vocabulary expansion
- L2 acquisition of phonology
- cultural models
- language/s for specific purposes
- L2 pragmatics
- mother tongue interference
- L2 thinking for speaking
- etc.

The workshop has already been accepted and there is room for three or four more
speakers. Please send your abstracts (approximately 300-500 words) to
niemeier at uni-koblenz.de and to cjuchem at uni-koblenz.de no later than Dec 30, 07.
Notification of acceptance will be sent out in mid-January.
