17th International Postgraduate Research Linguistics Conference

In March 1992 the Department of Linguistics at the University of Manchester
hosted its first Postgraduate Conference. Since then this annual event has
grown, now drawing participants from across the world to exchange ideas in a
relaxed but stimulating environment.

The aim of the Conference is to bring together postgraduates from within the
various areas of the discipline of Linguistics and to allow them to present
papers to their peers. It is hoped that the day will be rewarding for all in
attendance, both in learning and establishing new contacts.

To mark the occasion, we are delighted to announce plenary lectures by
Professor Martin Durrell (University of Manchester) on 'Linguistic minorities
and national identity' and by Professor Peter Trudgill (UEA) on 'Language
contact: Simplification and Complexification'.

The Conference is to be held on Friday, 8th February 2008 from 8.30am to 6.00pm,
at the University of Manchester. Dr Paul Bennett will also run a workshop on
Corpus Linguistics on Thursday, 7th of February 2008.

Refreshments and lunch will be provided during the day, with a dinner in the
evening for all those interested (dinner is not included in registration fee).
