2008 PALA conference on Time and the Text, to be held in Sheffield, July 2008 

Call for Papers for a Workshop on

Historical Stylistics

When modern stylistics established itself as a separate discipline in the 1960s,
it adopted the same stance towards its subject - synchronic, structuralist - as
was then dominant in its parent disciplines, linguistics and literary criticism.
In the 1980s, both literary and linguistic studies witnessed a return to
history, with the rise of New Historicism in literary criticism and a resurgence
of interest in historical linguistics among language scholars (the International
Conference in English Historical Linguistics, for instance, held its first
meeting in 1979). For some reason (which it would be interesting to explore),
the historical turn has not been replicated in stylistics. A scan of the
articles in Language and Literature or the papers at PALA conferences over the
last two decades reveals very few attempts to address historical material and
even fewer to articulate a historical method. Sheffield is something of an
exception to this generalisation, being home to a group of scholars whose
interest in 'time and the text' takes the form of attending to the ways in which
the historical circumstances of a text's production shape its form and
interpretation. We therefore invite participants at PALA 2008 - and others who
may be interested - to join us for a workshop on 'The Historical Perspective in
Literary Linguistics' on the day preceding the opening of the conference itself.
For those who attended PALA 2007, the workshop offers a chance to pursue,
complicate or contest the argument launched by Sylvia Adamson in the final
plenary: 'why stylistics should go to HEL'.

The Institute of French Linguistics (IFL), in partnership with numerous 
national and international organizations on French Linguistics, is organizing
the 1st world-wide conference on French Linguistics at the Cité Internationale
Universitaire in Paris.

This first world-wide French Linguistics conference will present a survey of the
state of the art / literature in the field in the form of 8 interdisciplinary
conferences given by guest / keynote speakers, 140 oral presentations and 300
written/ (poster) presentations in twelve areas.
Each of the 12 themes will present an extra session reserved exclusively to
young linguists (who have not yet completed their doctorates, or have had their
doctorates for no longer than 3 years).  

The presentations will be divided up by a thematic commission into oral
presentations and poster presentations. 
All presentations, oral, poster, or guest-speakers and interdisciplinary, as
well as round-table discussions will be published in the form of 10 to 12 page
articles in the conference proceedings (in the form of CD-ROMs accompanied by a
booklet of presentation titles and summaries), and will be kept in an electronic
format on the site of the conference. The electronic archives will remain
available online. 

Themes
The world-wide Conference on French Linguistics encompasses 12 topics with their
corresponding 12 sessions. Each topic is lead by a scientific moderator and a
specific international scientific committee. The guidelines and possible
subjects are specified in the call to papers for each topic.
