Dear Subscribers,

LINGUIST will be on holiday status from Saturday, 22 December to
Monday, 7 January 2008. During that time, with the exception of
emergencies, there will be no issues posted. Although the website will be
available some pages may not be updated during that time.

Any message submitted to our web form by midnight EST (U.S.) Friday, 21
December, will be posted before the break. To submit an item for posting,
visit:

http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.cfm

Except for emergencies, messages we receive after this will not be posted
until after we return on 8 January 2006. Anyone wishing to submit an
emergency message, please enter 'URGENT' in the subject line of the
submission, and send an email notification directly to the managing editor
(sawyer at linguistlist.org) or a moderator (aristar at linguistlist.org,
hdry at linguistlist.org), as the LINGUIST account will not be regularly
monitored during the vacation period.

===SOLICITATION OF IDEAS FOR NEW SITE SECTION===
While we're on our break, we invite you to consider a new section we will be
developing for the website in 2008 called The Student Portal. The portal
will be a section of the site designed for prospective and current
linguistics students, with tools, resources, and information to help them
do things like:

*Learn something about the field of linguistics and its subfields to see
whether it might be an area of study they would like to pursue
*Find tools and resources to do academic work (stylesheets, ideas for
choosing paper topics, suggestions for how to carry out research, etc.)
*Learn what they can do to make themselves attractive graduate school
applicants or job seekers
*Find degree funding opportunities and job listings

We invite you to send us your ideas about what such a section ought to
contain so that we can design one that they will be maximally useful to
you. We are especially interested in learning what kind of information and
resources you typically have trouble finding. Please email your ideas and
comments to sawyer at linguistlist.org.

==========LSA ANNUAL MEETING===============
As we have for some time, LINGUIST will be holding office hours at the
annual LSA meeting in Chicago. A separate message will be posted later
this week giving the location and times.

Finally, we at LINGUIST would like to wish you an enjoyable holiday season
and a fruitful new year. Thank you for your continued interest and support.

Sincerely,

Helen, Anthony, and the entire LINGUIST crew.
