Description:

A position for a researcher/PhD student (half-time position) is available in the
NLP group at EML Research starting March 1st, 2008, or as soon as possible
thereafter. The possibility of pursuing a PhD can be arranged in cooperation
with the University of Heidelberg - assuming that all formal requirements are
fulfilled.

The successful candidate will be working in a project funded by the European
Union dealing with semantic access to large audio databases originating mainly
from court proceedings. The subproject carried out at EML Research regards in
particular recognizing deception using shallow NLP techniques.

The ideal candidate has a strong background in computational linguistics and
possess a Master's or a Diploma degree in either computational linguistics,
computer science or linguistics. Experience with machine learning and
corpus-based methods as well as knowledge about statistics will be very useful.
Java programming skills are required. Some knowledge of Italian will be a plus.
The project will be funded for two years.

EML Research gGmbH is a private non-profit research laboratory dedicated to
basic and applied research in IT with a focus on bioinformatics and natural
language processing. The NLP group is an interdisciplinary research group that
works on applications in the area of discourse and dialogue, in particular
coreference resolution, lexical semantics, text generation, automatic
summarization, and knowledge extraction from semistructured input (see the
website listed above).
