The Fifth Workshop on Altaic Formal Linguistics (WAFL 5) will be held at
SOAS, University of London. Dates: 23 - 25 May, 2008. Abstracts are invited
for 20-minute presentations on formal aspects of any area of theoretical
Altaic linguistics, including syntax, phonology, morphology, and semantics.
Invited speakers are Asli Göksel (Bogaziçi University), Nobuko Hasegawa
(Kanda University of International Studies), and Michael Kenstowicz (MIT).
The workshop will include a special session on Comparative Altaic Syntax.

This is a reminder that the deadline for submissions to WAFL5 is December 30, 2007. A few details about the submission site(s) and contact information have been updated since the original Call for Papers. The current information on the conference follows:

The Department of Linguistics and Turkish Studies at the School of Oriental and African Studies, University of London are pleased to announce the Fifth Workshop on Altaic Formal Linguistics (WAFL5) on 23-24-25 May 2008 (Friday, Saturday, Sunday). Along with a General Session, there will be a Special Session on Comparative Altaic Syntax and talks by invited speakers.

General Session
Abstracts are invited for 20-minute presentations (plus 10 minutes discussion) on topics dealing with formal aspects of any area of theoretical Altaic linguistics, including syntax, phonology, morphology, and semantics.

Special Session: Comparative Altaic Syntax

Abstract Submission
Abstracts should be no more than two pages, single-spaced, 12-font, 1-inch margins; examples should be part of the text. All abstracts should be sent electronically to the conference e-mail address wafl5 at soas.ac.uk  as attachments in pdf format or Microsoft Office Word. You may also use the address of Bengisu Rona: br2 at soas.ac.uk. Please note that the number of abstracts per author is limited to one singly-authored and one co-authored abstract per author.

The following information is also requested:

3. affiliation(s) of author(s)
4. email address to which the notification of acceptance should be mailed
5. contact phone and fax numbers for each author
6. address for each author

This information should be in a separate file or included as part of the body of the e-mail message.

The deadline for receipt of abstracts is 30 December, 2007. Abstracts will be reviewed anonymously. The notification of acceptance will be sent around the end of January, 2008.

Workshop at the DKGL conference in Leipzig - 25-27 Sept 2008

Over the last three or four decades, the notion of prototypicality (and the related notions of gradience, indeterminacy and fuzziness) have received focal attention in a large number of publications on cognitive aspects of linguistic categorization. However, while researchers working in cognitive linguistics emphasize the general prototypical nature of linguistic categorization, cognitive models that account for the fuzziness of language are few and far between. In addition, while Rosch and colleagues, among others, have shown that human categorization to a large extent is driven by aspects of economy, there have as of yet been only few attempts to integrate notions like 'basic level category' or 'cue validity' in a comprehensive model of mental grammar and to show how these aspects may come into play
during language processing and language production.

This theme session invites papers that present research on linguistic categorization as being derived from and tailored to language use, focusing on plausible cognitive models of categorization and of language processing and production. Especially, we would like to encourage the presentation of studies within cognitive frameworks that deal with the following topics:
- prototypicality
- gradience
- fuzziness
- indeterminacy
- variation
- usage-based models
- language production and processing
- language acquisition

Papers are welcome from the areas of corpus linguistics and natural language processing/psycholinguistics, as well as papers which address methodological concerns in the modelling of categorization.

Abstract Submissions: Please send your abstract of no more than 300 words as a Word attachment to: rkreyer at uni-bonn.de 
Deadline: The deadline for abstracts is March 1st, 2008
Notification of acceptance: March 15th, 2008
Presentation Guidelines: Papers will be allotted 20 minutes, plus ten minutes for discussion.
