Henry Alan Gleason died in his sleep Friday evening, January 12, 2007, at
the age of 89. He was a major figure in American linguistics during the
last half of the past century, perhaps best known for his Introduction to
Descriptive Linguistics, on which an entire generation of students cut
their linguistic teeth. A memorial service will be held in El Paso, Texas,
on January 25.
