The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

A9.com, the search technology subsidiary of Amazon.com, is looking for a
highly motivated engineer interested in improving the quality of the
spelling correction system used in Amazon's product search. You must have
industry experience with spelling correction systems or related language
and string-processing techniques. You must be passionate about issues like
the efficiency of data structures for string searching, the advantages and
disadvantages of various phonetic encoding schemes, and the relative merits
of corpus-based versus behavior-based features.

You'll be joining A9's Search Relevance team, where you'll participate in
all parts of the R&D process, from experimenting with new ideas and
exploring new techniques to implementing the code used by millions of
Amazon.com customers every day. In addition to spelling correction, you'll
have the opportunity to work on other linguistic processing tasks such as
text segmentation and morphological analysis in several languages.

You'll work in A9's small-company environment, but have access to the
resources of Amazon.com, one of the world's leading Internet companies.

You must be an innovative thinker, a strong communicator, and a rock-solid
engineer with a record of working on industrial-strength software systems.

Requirements:
- Advanced degree in Computational Linguistics or related field, or
equivalent industry experience
- Java and C++ development in a Unix environment
- Practical experience working on spelling correction or similar
linguistic processing tools.
