Description:

Sound to Sense (S2S) is a Marie Curie Research Training Network involving
collaborative speech research amongst 13 universities in 10 countries. A
research training network's primary aim is to support and train young
researchers in professional and inter-disciplinary skills that equip them for
careers in research.

There is an opportunity for 1 Early Stage Researcher (ESR) on Project 6:
Low-Level Processing in L2 Speech Perception

Speech recognition by L2 learners suffers in adverse listening conditions.
Several factors are likely to be involved in this performance disparity: (i)
interference from the native language; (ii) incomplete acquisition (lack of FPD)
of L2 categories; and (iii) presumed universal confusions due to inherent
maskability of certain sounds. It is important to tease apart these factors if
effective L2 training regimes are to be devised and to gain insights into
processes and representations used by native listeners. The purpose of this
study is to clarify the role of the above factors via a series of behavioural
and computer modeling studies in a range of language communities.

The appointment will preferably start in September 2007. Applicants will
normally work towards a PhD degree, and must have less than 4 years' experience
in postgraduate research (i.e. you will have earned your academic qualifications
for graduate study less than 4 years before your S2S appointment starts).

For a more detailed description of this project, and for details of the other
vacancies and projects within S2S, please see the website listed below.

The appointed people will receive a standard EU stipend for the country of work,
together with allowances for relocation and language lessons etc.

Due to EU mobility regulations, Spanish citizens and those who have lived in
Spain for at least 12 of the last 36 months cannot be appointed to this post.
