The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of the West of England, Bristol
Department: School of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies
Web Address: http://www.uwe.ac.uk/hlss/llas/phd_linguistics.shtml

Job Rank: Lecturer

Specialty Areas: Applied Linguistics; General Linguistics; Historical
Linguistics; Metaphor & Rhetoric, Onomastics, Bilingualism

Description:

Applications are invited for a post as Lecturer/Senior Lecturer in Linguistics
and English Language in the School of Languages, Linguistics and Area Studies.
While specialists from any subfield in Linguistics/English Language are welcome
to apply for this post preference may be given to a candidate whose research
profile corresponds to existing strengths and whose teaching profile complements
that of current Linguistics/English Language staff.

The person appointed will be expected to contribute to the teaching on the
highly popular undergraduate half awards in Linguistics and English Language in
the Joint Honours scheme and, where qualified to do so, to supervise
postgraduate students at both MA and PhD levels. Suitably qualified candidates
may also have the opportunity to contribute to the new MA in English Language by
distance learning.

Currently the main areas of research include Applied Linguistics, Bilingualism
and Language Contact, Historical Linguistics and Onomastics, Language Variation
and Change, Metaphor and Rhetoric. The Linguistics researchers are organised in
the International Corpus Linguistics Unit
(http://www.uwe.ac.uk/hlss/llas/iclru/index.shtml) and have recently set up a
UWE Corpus of Learner Language and Bilingual Speech (see
http://www.uwe.ac.uk/hlss/llas/iclru/uwelbcnew.doc).

Following the recent appointment of two Chairs in Linguistics, the School is in
the process of establishing the Bristol Centre for Linguistics. The School
expects to score highly in its submission to the Linguistics Unit of Assessment
in the RAE 2008. It is expected that the work of the successful candidate will
be included in this submission. Many staff members are involved in research
supervision (see
http://www.uwe.ac.uk/hlss/llas/phd_linguistics.shtml). Currently research
support is maintained on a consistent basis with all academic staff having the
opportunity to apply for a semester's leave, although the precise timing of such
leave is related to clear research plans and the needs of the School.

We are looking for a pro-active member of the research and teaching team, whose
research activity is reflected in recent publications and conference contributions
The post arises from the continued expansion of Linguistics and English Language
at all levels.

The person appointed will:
- have a PhD in Linguistics/English Language (or be about to submit a PhD thesis)
- have some experience of teaching Linguistics/English Language in Higher Education
- be able to deliver high-quality teaching using both classroom and innovative
teaching methods such as e-learning
- be actively engaged in individual and/or collaborative research
- have a record of publications in international journals and/or book chapters
- be able to work co-operatively in a team with academic and administrative
colleagues, and to perform competently administrative tasks related to teaching
- be able to contribute to the university's knowledge exchange agenda

Candidates with experience in applying for external funding will have a distinct
advantage. For an informal discussion, please contact Dr Peter Gold.
Application forms should be submitted via email.
