SHEL 5, the fifth biennial conference on Studies in the History of the English
Language, will be held at the University of Georgia, in Athens, October 4 - 6, 2007.

Faculty, graduate students, and independent scholars are invited to submit
abstracts for 20-minute papers on any linguistic or philological aspect of the
history of English. Papers from a range of linguistic and philological
subfields, including phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics,
pragmatics, sociolinguistics, stylistics, metrics, discourse analysis, corpus
linguistics, language acquisition, contact, and change, as well as differing
theoretical and methodological perspectives, are welcome.  We also welcome
proposals for workshops and special sessions.

Abstracts are due June 1, 2007. Abstracts for 20-minute papers should be no
longer than 500 words.  Proposals for workshops or special sessions should
provide, in up to 1500 words, a rationale for the proposal and brief abstracts
for papers to be included or descriptions of other activities for a 90-minute
session. Abstracts and proposals should be submitted as e-mail attachments in MS
Word format. Abstracts will undergo anonymous review. Please provide author name
and contact info and the paper title in the body of the email to which the
abstract is attached, and omit author information from the abstract itself.
Please send abstracts as PDF files as well as MS Word files if they contain any
specialized fonts.

General SHEL Information:

The Studies in the History of the English Language Conference (SHEL) series has
become a biennial tradition, giving the field of Historical English Linguistics
both focus and recognition in North America and providing the critical
opportunity for scholars in the field to gather and share their research. SHEL
follows in the tradition of the biennial conferences known as ICEHL
(International Conference on English Historical Linguistics), traditionally
hosted at research centers throughout Europe. We see the two conference series,
one in Europe and one in North America, as complementary in important ways.

Meeting Description

The primary target of this conference is to meet people who have a common line
of investigation (political discourse) with the purpose of interchanging our
experiences in this field. 

Call for Papers/Posters
(peer-review evaluation)

Proposals (individual papers and posters) are invited on all areas of the
conference, including the following themes:

1. Political Discourse.
2. Persuasion and Power.
3. Political Rhetoric.
4. Parliamentary Discourse.
5. Discourse at the European Parliament.
6. Political Discourse across cultures.
7. Translation and Interpretation of Political Discourse.

Abstract Format

Individual paper/poster proposals should be within 250 words.
Submissions should be in one of the official languages of the Conference
(Spanish and English). The first page should include: (1) title, (2) authors and
affiliations, (3) postal and email address and (4) abstract.
Please note: the Paper Abstract Due date is the date to submit a brief idea or
summary of your paper. There is no acceptance process for abstracts; they simply
indicate your intent to submit a paper. The Paper Due date is the date when the
paper must be submitted for the peer referee process. Once the paper has been
refereed, accepted, and passed the editing process, the final version is due on
the Camera Ready Copy Due date, which is when the paper must be re-submitted
with any updates, corrections or modifications and is ready for
publication in the CMG Proceedings.
