Discourses of (Be)Longing: Nostalgia and Loss in Transnational Contexts

This panel will explore discourses of nostalgia and memory among people whose
lives span national borders. Through a focus on personal narratives, the
panelists in this session bridge political economic analyses with an emphasis on
affect and emotion?a topic understudied in a transnational context. The
panelists seek to examine the ways in which discourses of/on emotion construct,
reinforce, and dispute social structures of difference and inequality. We
understand emotions as social action intertwined
with?and inherent to?structures of power and politics in specific
sociohistorical contexts: How do transnational subjects experience politically-
and economically-driven migrations? How do discourses of emotion delineate
structures of power and injustice? What can narratives of longing tell us about
belonging and exclusion in a global context? By considering these questions, the
panelists present a framework that recognizes the integral role emotion
discourses play in processes of
transnational movement. An analysis of affect and (be)longing in a transnational
context can historically situate political and economic structures, as well as
provide insights into the everyday experiences of (im)migrants, refugees, and
displaced people as they negotiate cultural and national boundaries. This
collection of papers considers the tensions transnational individuals experience
as they create lives in new places and
long for that which is left behind.
