The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Description:

ESRC CENTRE FOR RESEARCH ON
BILINGUALISM IN THEORY AND PRACTICE

CANOLFAN ESRC DROS YMCHWIL I THEORI
AC YMARFER DDWYIEITHRWYDD

We are delighted to announce new job opportunities in bilingualism at
Bangor. A new ESRC Centre for Research on Bilingualism has been
established as the result of a £5 million grant from the ESRC, the Higher
Education Funding Council for Wales and the Welsh Assembly Government.
This is an exciting new joint venture between the Schools of Linguistics
and English Language, Education and Psychology (rated 5* in the last RAE),
making use of the excellent research facilities available in these Schools
including brain-imaging laboratories. Research will focus on the nature of
the relationship between the two languages of individual bilingual speakers
as well as amongst the wider community, from four different methodological
perspectives: Neuroscientific, Experimental, Corpus-based, Survey &
Ethnography.

Applications are invited for a Chair in Bilingualism in the School of
Linguistics and English Language. The research focus will be structural
and social aspects of the relationship between a bilingual's two languages.
The Chair in Bilingualism will have an attachment to the new ESRC Centre
for Research on Bilingualism.

The candidate must have a Ph.D. in Linguistics or a related field, an
excellent track record of research and publications in terms of the RAE,
evidence of grant capture in bilingualism, an international profile, strong
academic leadership skills and a sustained track record of securing
research funding to support and develop academic activity. Evidence of
excellence in teaching and of attracting grant funding from relevant
sources would be desirable. The candidate must have excellent
interpersonal skills, be able to develop effective working relationships
and manage a substantial workload and demanding timescales. Administrative
and/or managerial experience would be desirable. The candidate must have
sympathetic appreciation of the bilingual and bicultural character of
modern Wales.

The Director of the new ESRC Centre, Professor Margaret Deuchar, is based
in the School of Linguistics and English Language. This is one of the
oldest linguistics departments in the UK, and the only one in Wales. The
School currently offers BA degrees in Linguistics and in English Language
and MAs in Linguistics and in Applied Linguistics. The two MA programmes
are the basis for entry to our Ph.D. Programmes in Linguistics and
Bilingualism. All our postgraduate degrees have ESRC recognition. The
School offers a broad range of undergraduate and postgraduate modules,
which seek to accommodate the interests of a diverse body of some 180
students. Most of our students are recruited from outside Wales, though we
provide some Welsh-medium teaching for Welsh-speaking students who choose
to study in the School.
