Meeting Description: 

The Humour Summer School is designed not only to fit the needs of new students
and researchers preparing for careers that would be enhanced by a deeper
knowledge of humor and laughter (in dimensions ranging from the philosophical
through the physiological to the practical), but also for trained scholars in
the natural sciences and humanities who are considering embarking on new
investigations of humor/laughter-related phenomena.

As in previous years, the Summer School is designed not only to fit the needs of
new students and researchers preparing for careers that would be enhanced by a
deeper knowledge of humor and laughter (in dimensions ranging from the
philosophical through the physiological to the practical), but also for trained
scholars in the natural sciences and humanities who are considering embarking on
new investigations of humor/laughter-related phenomena. The Symposium is a
session within the week when the Summer School participants give presentations
about their own work. Enrolment in the Summer School is deliberately limited
(less than 30 participants) so as to accommodate the individual interests of
each student and to keep the seminars to an optimal didactic size.

Topics include:

An introduction to humour research
Were Soviet political jokes a form of protest?
Jokes and cartoons, conflict and war
Is humour theory of any use to anyone? 
Ethnic humor and ethnic relations 
Is incongruity that is resolved humor? 
Word play: humorous and non-humorous
Are cartoons drawn jokes?
Analyzing texts with the General Theory of Verbal Humour Social differences in
sense of humor (and how to study them..)
Humor and social theory 
The cultural industry of humor
Sitcoms, sketch shows and mocumentaries: analysing television comedy
Borat, Berlusconi and Brass Eye: exploring the limits of humour
Humor in folklore and anthropology
The analysis of jokes
Humor as communication
The analysis of repertoire
The aesthetics of joke performance
Computational humour and language skills development 
The methodology of testing humour theories 
Measuring humour traits and states: What instrument to use when and why?
Humour and laughter: malleable or (genetically) fixed?
Humor as character strength, orientations to happiness, and life satisfaction
