Dear Subscribers,

As you know, The LINGUIST List is staffed largely by hardworking linguistics
students--as well as some programming students--from countries all over the
world. You will hear from many of these students in this space during our 2007
Fund Drive. We hope to familiarize you with them and to put faces to the work
they do here, so that you may all appreciate the value of supporting LINGUIST
and, by extension, their educational and professional development as future
linguists. Who knows--they may be coming soon to a graduate program near you!
The experiences these students get from working at LINGUIST go a long way toward
preparing them for further academic and professional work.

I came to LINGUIST as an editor, and after surviving the breathtaking--as
anyone who has been here can attest--learning curve of the job, took over as
Managing Editor from Michael Appleby in late 2005. As LINGUIST's managing
editor, I have had the opportunity to develop new editorial and customer-service
related policies, train new editors, assist in the development and redesign of
major aspects of LINGUIST's website, and correspond with linguists whose names I
had previously only known from books, papers, and the news!

Perhaps we who work here at LINGUIST have an unfair advantage over other
linguistics grad students, but each of us is sincerely grateful for this unique
educational opportunity. We consider ourselves very fortunate to be here. By
supporting our work here, you not only support our education but also, by
extension, future directions in the field of linguistics. If you are curious
about any of the current members of the LINGUIST team, please pay our homepage a
visit: https://www.linguistlist.org. The left side menu bar includes
hyperlinked names of each staff member, where you can learn more about them. And
please watch this space during Fund Drive, where personal letters from many of
them will appear.

I hope you will consider making a donation to The LINGUIST List this year, so
that we may continue to provide you with the best, most comprehensive online
linguistics resource there is in the world. And if you haven't visited the
website in a while, please use the link above and give special attention to the
top menu bar, where you can discover more about the multiple ways LINGUIST
brings you what you need every day.

Sincerely,
Ann Sawyer
Managing Editor
The LINGUIST List

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
