Subject: Megan Zdrojkowski on becoming Assistant Project Manager

Dear Subscribers,

This is my third year here at LINGUIST; I was a graduate assistant for two years,
and this year I have the pleasure of staying on in the capacity of Assistant
Project Manager while I complete my master's thesis. During my time at LINGUIST,
I've been involved in a number of different projects and areas of the LINGUIST
site, including co-coordinating Fund Drive 2006. During my graduate assistantship,
I was Publications manager, and I learned an incredible amount about linguistics
and programming through this challenging position. (Classifying hundreds of books
and journal TOCs by the relevant subfields and languages certainly teaches you
about all the various subfields of linguistics!)

As I have assumed a more managerial role this past year, I have also learned a
considerable amount about the challenges of running a non-profit academic
organization funded mostly by subscriber donations and staffed by graduate
students and professors. I assure you that LINGUIST is a very barebones
operation--each one of our employees is essential, and everybody works long
hours for little pay to keep LINGUIST up and running.

However, even though the work here can at times be stressful and is always
fast-paced, there are a great many benefits to working at LINGUIST. The best
benefit of all is the training graduate assistants receive in linguistics,
programming, and other professional skills. G.A.s leave LINGUIST fully prepared
to take on the rigors of a top-notch Ph.D. program and to contribute valuable
scholarly research to the discipline.

In addition to learning the skills necessary to keep the LINGUIST website and
Listserv running, our G.A.s have the chance to work on our innovative and
exciting grants and conferences. LINGUIST is focused on collaboration with the
linguistics community, other academic disciplines, and speaker communities, and
our grant work and conferences reflect this focus. (You'll be hearing more about
the LL-MAP and Multi-Tree grants and the TILR and SILS conferences later in this
year's Fund Drive. Please scroll down to read about some of our workshops and
conferences.)

As Assistant Project Manager, I've had the privilege of training and working
closely with this year's G.A.s, and I'm continually surprised by their
intelligence and passion for linguistics. If all linguistics students are as
talented, dedicated, and hardworking as this year's LINGUIST crew, then the
future of linguistics is definitely in good hands.

In closing, I'm very grateful to be a part of LINGUIST, and I'd like to send a
warm thank you to all of you who have already donated. Your contributions not
only ensure that LINGUIST will be able to continue for another year--they also
provide funding for the education of future linguists. For those of you who
haven't donated yet, please consider doing so today.

Sincerely,
Megan Zdrojkowski
Assistant Project Manager

Subject: Conferences & LINGUIST - TILR

Dear Subscribers,

Some of you may be surprised to learn that in addition to maintaining a mailing
list and website, LINGUIST is actively involved in organizing a number of
workshops and conferences, such as the highly successful E-MELD workshops held
each summer from 2001-2006. (Please visit http://emeld.org to learn more about
the E-MELD grant and workshops.)

LINGUIST is focused on collaboration with the linguistics community, other
academic disciplines, and speaker communities, and our conferences reflect this
focus. This summer, LINGUIST is helping organize two unique conferences that
cross disciplines and academic boundaries: the 14th Annual Stabilizing
Indigenous Languages Symposium (SILS) and Toward the Interoperability of
Language Resources (TILR).

Conference information can be found at the following URLs:
     http://linguistlist.org/sils/
     http://linguistlist.org/tilr/

This letter focuses on TILR, but please check back tomorrow for more information
on SILS.

The TILR workshop will be held July 13-15 at Stanford University in conjunction
with the 2007 LSA Summer Institute. It will capitalize on the momentum of two
workshops held in conjunction with the 2006 LSA Summer Meeting at Michigan State
University: the Digital Tools Summit in Linguistics (DTSL) and the E-MELD
(Electronic Metastructure for Endangered Languages Data) workshop on digital
language documentation: "Tools and Standards: The State of the Art."

A major aim of both E-MELD and DTSL has been to involve an interdisciplinary
group of researchers in the resolution of pressing issues in linguistic data
management. E-MELD has primarily stimulated the development, evaluation, and
amelioration of guidelines and standards for annotation, computer-assisted
lexicography, ontologies, and extant tools; DTSL focused on catalyzing the
development of the next generation of tools for linguistic inquiry. In focusing
on interoperability, the TILR workshop will exploit the momentum of E-MELD and
DTSL to involve an even more diverse group of researchers in addressing a
critical issue in the development of cyberinfrastructure for linguistics.

This meeting is intended to encourage tool developers to coordinate outputs of
existing tools and to plan new tools that are extensible, modular, and renewable.
If tools developed by one project can be readily adapted for other similar
projects, this will not only conserve development time and effort, but will also
constitute major progress towards the ultimate goal of creating sustainable and
accessible digital resources.

If you are interested in attending TILR, please visit the above website for more
information. The deadline for abstracts, issue statements, and biographies has
been extended until the end of March. If you have any questions about this
workshop, please feel free to contact the conference organizers, Dr. Helen
Aristar-Dry and Dr. Arienne Dwyer at tilr at linguistlist.org.

Sincerely,
The LINGUIST Crew

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $55,000. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2007
LINGUIST List Superhero Adventure for some Fund Drive fun!

http://linguistlist.org/donation/fund-drive2007/

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
