Sessions on Language Variation in the United States at the Midwest Modern
Language Association annual meeting. 

This is a reminder of the deadline for abstract submission.

We welcome papers dealing with varieties of English and other languages spoken
in the United States. Presentations may be based in traditional dialectology or
in other areas of language variation and change, including sociolinguistics,
historical linguistics, anthropological linguistics, folk linguistics, language
and gender/sexuality, language attitudes and ideologies,  pragmatics and
politeness, linguistics in the schools, critical discourse analysis, or
narratology. 

April 1, 2007 is the deadline for abstracts. See below for abstract specifications.

Abstract specifications: Email submissions only; send abstract as an attachment
in Word. Abstract should be no more than 250 words, excluding title and
references. Include word count at the end of the abstract and omit any
identifying information (name, affiliation, etc). Include contact information,
affiliation, and abstract title in the body of your email. 

Membership to ADS is recommended. Membership is $50 and includes a year's
subscription to the society's journal, American Speech, and a copy of the
Publication of the American Dialect Society (PADS, an annual hardbound
supplement). Membership information is available at www.americandialect.org.

Membership to MMLA is required. Membership is $35 for full and associate
professors, $30 for assistant professors and schoolteachers, $20 for adjunct and
part-time faculty, and $15 for students, retired, and unemployed. Information on

Linguistic theories and the biological foundations of human language: 
a dialogue 
This III meeting intends to focus on encouraging a dialogue among researchers
who are interested in understanding how language functions in the human brain.
There are basically two types of methods of analysis which are being used. One
looks at how the Language Function expresses itself in the brain at a biological
level. The other looks at whether this functioning can be encapsulated using a
representational approach. Both methods, the physical and the metaphysical one,
need each other in order to handle, in the best way possible, the limitations
they have when faced with interpreting the overwhelming complexity which the
Language Function exhibits.

diálogo 
Este tercer congreso trata de enfocarse en alentar el diálogo entre
investigadores que están interesados en entender cómo funciona el lenguaje en el
cerebro humano. Hay dos tipos básicos de métodos de análisis que se están
utilizando. Uno investiga cómo se expresa la función lingüística en el cerebro
desde un punto de vista biológico y el otro si este funcionamiento puede
encapsularse usando una aproximación representacional. Ambos métodos, el físico
por una parte y el meta-físico por otra se necesitan mútuamente para enfrentarse
mejor a las limitaciones que tienen a la hora de interpretar la complejidad
desbordante que presenta el funcionamiento lingüístico.
