================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Historical Linguistics; Grammaticalization, Complementation

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The Research Unit 'Functional Linguistics Leuven' of the Catholic
University of Leuven invites applications for a Post Doc position (3 years)
or a PhD position (4 years) within the research program 'Grammaticalization
and (inter)subjectification' (GRAMIS), funded by the Belgian national
research programme 'Interuniversity Attraction Poles' (IAP VI). The
preferred starting date for either position is September 1, 2007.

Description of the project:
The project aims to contribute to current research on processes of
grammaticalization (in the structural domain) and (inter)subjectification
(in the semantic domain) in language change.
The project brings together linguistic research groups at the universities
of Antwerp, Leuven, Ghent, Louvain-la-Neuve, Hannover, and the Department
of Cultural Anthropology at the Royal Museum of Central Africa in Brussels.

Within the context of this project, the successful applicant will
investigate how various types of clause combining in the history of English
reflect common assumptions about grammaticalization and how they interact
with other mechanisms of change, and analogy in particular.

Requirements for the Post Doc position:
Candidates must hold a PhD in the field of English linguistics, with a
primary specialisation or strong interest in diachronic linguistics. They
should have experience of corpus linguistics, and ideally, have already
published in the area of grammaticalization and/or English historical
linguistics. Furthermore, the successful applicant should not have held a
position at a Belgian university in the two years preceding the
application; nor should they have obtained PhD degree at a Belgian university.

Requirements for the PhD position
Candidates must have a Masters degree or equivalent in English linguistics
and have shown an interest (through their course work) for English
diachronic linguistics, or show willingness to learn methods of diachronic
(corpus-based) research. The successful applicant is expected to continue
their training within their area of specialization.

We especially welcome candidates who share the FLL research group's
interest in approaching language from a usage based perspective and in
solid empirical analysis informed by cognitive and/or functional views on
language.

Applications including a letter of motivation, a curriculum vitae, copies
of exam results, a statement of research interests, and copies of any
relevant publications can be sent to the email address found below.
Further information about the post and/or a detailed description of the
research project can also be obtained from this email address.
