Meeting Description

GRAPHSY is a symposium organized by the graduate students of the Dept of Spanish
and Portuguese at Georgetown University. It is an opportunity for graduate
students to present research in linguistics or literature that deals with
Spanish or Portuguese. 

Call for Papers 

Spanish and Portuguese at the Forefront of the Arts and Sciences:  
A Symposium on Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Linguistics, Literature and Visual
Culture 

The Georgetown University graduate students in the Department of Spanish and
Portuguese invite all interested graduate students to the third annual Graduate
Portuguese and Hispanic Symposium (GRAPHSY), which will be held on Friday,
September 28 and Saturday, September 29, 2007. 

The organizing committee will consider papers related to Hispanic and
Luso-Brazilian Linguistics, Literature, and Cultural Studies, as well as
requests for the formation of special sessions organized around a specific
topic, author or work. These sessions are limited to three papers. 

Papers may examine the conference topic from a variety of perspectives,
including linguistic, social, psychological, cultural, theoretical, political,
ideological, and/or artistic. Possible panel topics and papers might include,
but are not limited to: 

Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Linguistics 
Phonology
Syntax
Semantics 
Pragmatics
Language Acquisition (first, second and subsequent)
Language Pedagogy
Language and Cognition
Historical Linguistics 
Sociolinguistics (language policies and practices, minority languages,
code-switching)

Hispanic and Luso-Brazilian Literature and Cultural Studies 
Medieval
Early Modern
Spain from 1800 to Present Day
Colonial 
Contemporary Latin American and Peninsular Literature and Culture
Lusophone Africa
Performance and Visual Culture 
Gender Identities and Politics
Ethnographic Writing

Please submit by July 1st, 2007 two separate 250-word abstracts in Portuguese,
English or Spanish to GRAPHSY2007 at gmail.com. Abstracts will be selected based on
their relevance to the theme and topics of the symposium.

Two copies of the abstract should be sent to GRAPHSY2007 at gmail.com:
- On one abstract, please include the title of the proposed paper, name,
academic affiliation, current address, telephone, and e-mail address of each
presenter. 
- The second abstract should include the paper title only. 

Paper presentations are limited to 20 minutes (8-10 double-spaced pages).
Registration:
General registration fee for all presenters is $40 (late or on-site official
attendance registration is $50).  This fee includes the cost of all food and
beverages provided at the conference.

LingO 2007 - The Second Oxford Linguistics Postgraduate Conference

Final Call for Papers (Submission deadline extended)

We are pleased to announce that LingO 2007, the 2nd Oxford Linguistics
Postgraduate Conference, will take place at St. Anne's College, University of
Oxford, on 21 - 22 September 2007. The aim of the conference is to provide
postgraduates with an opportunity to present their research to peers and the
wider academic community.

Authors are invited to submit abstracts for talks or poster presentations.
Abstracts are invited from any linguistic subfield, especially the fields of
phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax, semantics, pragmatics,
sociolinguistics, psycholinguistics, and computational linguistics.

Talks will be allotted 20 minutes for presentation and 10 minutes for
discussion. Authors presenting posters will have an opportunity to do so during
the poster session on the second day of the conference. Authors will also be
invited to submit an 8-page paper for publication in our online conference
proceedings.
