Meeting Description:

Main Clauses as Subordinate Clauses?
Workshop on syntax and pragmatics of clause linkage

The workshop deals with syntactic constructions which do not easily fit the
dichotomy of independent vs subordinate clauses. The talks will investigate the
grammatical properties of clauses which are marked both for subordination (e.g.
by argument status, occurence of a complementiser, etc.) and for independence
(e.g. by non-final verb placement, fixed position within the host sentence, etc.).

These in-between cases are looked at from different linguistic perspectives in
order to establish possible ways of formal and functional description and
explanation. Furthermore, the question whether formal marking of a clause as
subordinate correlates with syntactic embedding and/or communicative
backgrounding will be discussed.

Speakers:

Hans-Werner Eroms, Passau
Ulrike Freywald, Potsdam
Wolfgang Imo, Muenster
Gunther Kaltenboeck, Wien
Andreas Loetscher, Basel
Marga Reis, Tuebingen & Angelika Woellstein, Koeln/Tuebingen

The talks will be held in German.
