The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Psycholinguistics

Description:

The Max Planck Institute for Psycholinguistics (Nijmegen, the Netherlands)
is offering a senior staff position in the field of the neurobiology of
language production and comprehension. It is a research position in a very
inspiring research environment, without teaching obligations; furthermore,
considerable technical support is available, as well as access to state of
the art research and neuroimaging facilities. The position will be
available from the end of 2007 and has a term of appointment of 5 years.

We are looking for an experimental scientist with a background in
psycholinguistics who is interested in undertaking research in our project
Language in Action. Language is normally not used in isolation. We use it
to make people do, feel or believe things, and we even use it to guide our
own perceptions, reasoning, and actions. This project focuses on how
language operates in the context of other domains of cognition, how it is
influenced by and coordinated with concomitant actions (e.g., gestures) and
action goals, and how it provides a setting for perceptual systems. A
number of these issues will be investigated in a Virtual Reality Lab, an
environment that allows us to study complex language use in experimentally
well-controlled situations.

Candidates should be interested in undertaking research in the area
mentioned above, and be willing to spearhead the research in our Virtual
Reality Lab. An ability to work collaboratively in an interdisciplinary
team is a must. Candidates should have a strong publication track record. A
track record in supervising PhD students would be welcomed.

Applications should include:
(i) a c.v.
(ii) a list of publications.
(iii) the names of two referees who would be willing to write letters of
recommendation.
(iv) examples of published work.
(v) a cover letter describing research interests.

For information about the position, please contact Peter Hagoort.
