================================================================

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Oxford University Press
Department: OED
Web Address: http://www.oup.com

Job Rank: Editorial Assistant

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

An Editorial Assistant (one year fixed term contract) is required to join
the team of lexicographers working on the revision of the Oxford English
Dictionary. The OED is the premier reference work in its field, documenting
the English language from the earliest period to the present day. It is
currently undergoing its first full revision since its original publication
between 1884 and 1928, and completed sections are being published quarterly
online.

The successful applicant will be required to research and record historical
spelling variation, including variants from Middle English and regional
literature, and also to research appropriate quotation evidence for World
English items.

A First or Upper Second class degree (or equivalent) in a relevant subject
is required, together with experience of reading Middle English. Some
experience of reading Older Scots would also be highly advantageous. A
careful methodology and close attention to detail are essential, as is the
ability to work accurately, logically, and rapidly through complex
linguistic data.

The post will be based in Oxford. Shortlisted candidates are likely to be
asked to complete a lexicographical aptitude test.

Interviews will take place in January 2008.
