Meeting Description:

The 24th Forum Junge Romanistik, 'Zeichen setzen - Konvention, Kreativität,
Interpretation', is dedicated to semiotics in Romance Languages and Literatures.

The 'Forum Junge Romanistik' is an annual meeting aiming to bring together
graduate students, postgraduates and postdoctorals concerned with Romance
Studies, encouraging them to discuss their research with colleagues coming from
a similar background.

Its 24th issue, to be held at the University of Tübingen (Germany), is dedicated
to semiotics in Romance Languages and Literatures. Signs are the underlying
elements of any type of communication; they are crucial both for production and
reception. Thus, the German phrase ''Zeichen setzen'', meaning both ''to set a
sign'' and ''to leave a mark'' metaphorically indicates that every sign is
subject to a conflict between conventionality and creativity, managed by
interpretation. In this conference, we will discuss the creation and
interpretation of different signs and sign systems with respect to their
possibilities and limits in daily communication as well as in specific cultural
symbolism and myths.

We encourage the participation of young scholars from a linguistic or literary
background, as well as of scientists from neighbouring fields such as
philosophy, art history, cultural studies, dramatics, or musicology. Papers can
be read in German or any Romance language. Presentation slots are 30 minutes (20
minutes for presentation, 10 minutes for discussion). Abstracts (300 words max.)
should be sent to fjr2008 at uni-tuebingen.de by January 15, 2008.
