Description:

Two PhD positions in theoretical linguistics at The Center for Advanced
Study in Theoretical Linguistics (CASTL) at the Faculty of Humanities,
University of Tromsø. Ref. 07-5308. 

The Faculty of Humanities has about 120 positions and deals with research
and teaching in Comparative Literature, General Linguistics, Documentation
Science with Library Science, English, Finnish, French, Greek and Latin
studies, Art History, Nordic, Russian, Sámi and German. The Faculty
consists of the Department of Culture and Literature, the Department of
Linguistics and the Center for Advanced Study in Theoretical Linguistics, A
Norwegian Center of Excellence (CASTL). 

CASTL is funded by The Norwegian Research Council and the University of
Tromsø. The scientific group at the center currently consists of 6 senior
researchers, 5 postdoctoral research fellows, and 18 PhD students. Several
other researchers and PhD students with other sources of funding are also
associated with the center, such that it consists today of about 40
researchers and PhD students.

CASTL is responsible for a Graduate School in theoretical linguistics, and
the advertised positions will be associated with this school. More

Applicants for the positions must provide a description of the PhD project
which meets CASTL's research profile as described at:

Our primary research activity is within generative grammar, especially
syntax and phonology. 

These two positions will be appointed within the area of syntax.

Individuals hired in these positions are expected to follow the Graduate
School program and to complete a doctoral dissertation. A more detailed
plan for teaching, coursework and research will be developed by the
employee together with the research environment and/or supervisor shortly
after beginning the position.

The positions are fixed-term for four years with 25% administrative or
teaching duties each year. Previous employment as a research fellow or in
an equivalent recruitment position will count as part of the education
program, so that the total number of years spent on the education program
is three.

The successful applicant will have to document competence in theoretical
linguistics at the Master's level. The applicant must be able to use
English in his/her teaching and research. The salary for the positions
follows the relevant Norwegian regulations for public organizations (code
1017). A 2% contribution to the Norwegian pension fund is obligatory.
