Description:

Fellowships and Teaching Assistantships are available for students who wish to
pursue the PhD degree in French with concentration in Linguistics at the
University of California, Davis.

Our faculty members teach courses and supervise research in all fields of
linguistics, most notably second language acquisition, phonology, morphosyntax,
creoles studies & contact linguistics, teaching methodology, language evolution,
and the history of French & Romance. The Graduate Program prides itself on
mentoring students and on developing common research and teaching projects.

At UCDavis, PhD students can choose from several Designated Emphases (e.g.
Second Language Acquisition, Critical Theory) and have opportunities to work
with over 30 scholars through the Graduate Group in Linguistics. Students also
have the possibility of studying and pursuing research abroad through any of the
UC Centers, of which there are six in France alone.

Teaching Assistants typically teach one course per quarter in our Lower Division
French Program while undertaking coursework and research toward the PhD degree.
Contracts are for one academic year (nine months), renewable for up to six
years. Several Fellowships are also available to highly qualified students at
different stages of their graduate work.

TAs and fellowship recipients receive partial fee and tuition remission (valued
at approximately $11,000 for 2007-2008) as well as health insurance. Stipends
for 2007-2008 are $15,500 for Teaching Assistants.

UCDavis is one of ten University of California Campuses, situated close to
Sacramento and only a short drive from the San Francisco Bay Area and Lake
Tahoe. Students enjoy a lively cultural life, the natural wonders of Northern
California, and the nearby Napa and Sonoma Valley wine countries.
