The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: University of Lisbon
Department: Department of Informatics
Web Address: http://nlxgroup.di.fc.ul.pt

Job Rank: Post Doc

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics

Description:

The NLX - Natural Language and Speech Group at the Department of
Informatics of the University of Lisbon is seeking post-graduate or
post-doctoral researchers to work on the development of linguistically
interpreted corpora and the companion grammar for deep processing of
Portuguese. The starting date is approximately
January 2008.

Factors of preference:
Experience or an interest in grammar development, with programming
experience; background in linguistic theory, grammar formalisms and/or
computational semantics. Knowledge of Portuguese is not required, but will
be a plus.

The successful candidates will work in the SemanticShare research project,
in the scope of the international DELPH-IN initiative.

Candidates envisaging to work towards their academic degrees in tandem with
their work in the project are encouraged to apply.

Research specializations of particular interest include, though they are
not restricted to, the following:
- exploitation of monolingual or parallel corpora for NLP tasks
- machine learning and stochastic methods building on deep linguistic
processing tools/combinations of multiple tools
- exploitation of the grammar to support paraphrase-enhanced Question Answering

All positions will have an initial 6 month contract, extending over two
years. Further extensions are possible (subject to the availability of
funding).

The social benefits include insurance and public social security contract,
and the net salary is determined by the pay scale of the Portuguese funding
agency FCT:
http://www.fct.mctes.pt/pt/apoios/bolsas/valores/
For a PhD student, this amounts to approximately EUR 1000 per month.

The University of Lisbon offers an attractive academic environment, in a
campus located in the center of the town; the NLX Group
(http://nlxgroup.di.fc.ul.pt/) has interdisciplinary ties with Linguistics,
Psychology, Neuroscience and Philosophy via a joint cognitive science program.

Interested candidates are invited to send their application materials (a
CV, [links to] sample publications, a statement of research interests, two
references, and the possible date to start), preferably by email, to the
address below. Applications received by December 21, 2008 will receive
fullest consideration; however, the search continues until the positions
have been filled.

For further information, please contact Prof. Dr. António Branco.
