Description:

PhD position in Contact Linguistics

Applications are invited for a PhD scholarship in the interdisciplinary junior
research group of Dr. Brigitte Pakendorf on 'Comparative Population Linguistics'
at the Max Planck Institute for Evolutionary Anthropology in Leipzig, Germany.
The successful applicant will be expected to work on language contact phenomena
in Dolgan. The focus of the project will be on establishing the kinds of
contact-induced changes and the possible model languages involved, in close
collaboration with a molecular anthropologist working on the population history
of Siberia. Applicants need to have a master's degree or equivalent in a
relevant field to be eligible. Some experience in linguistic fieldwork and with
languages of Siberia is highly desirable. An interest in interdisciplinary
research is important, and a knowledge of Russian is imperative.

The junior research group on 'Comparative Population Linguistics' is an
interdisciplinary group consisting of molecular anthropologists and linguists
devoted to the study of prehistoric population and language contact. Additional
information can be found on our webpage above. The group is affiliated with the
Department of Linguistics at the MPI for Evolutionary Anthropology, which has a
strong focus on functional-typological research as well as on fieldwork-based
language description; see http://www.eva.mpg.de/lingua/.

Interested individuals should send a letter of application, curriculum vitae, a
sample of their writing, and the names and FAX numbers or e-mail addresses of
two referees to Brigitte Pakendorf by e-mail. The deadline for applications is
October 31st; shortlisted candidates will be invited to interview in the second
half of November. The position will be available from January 1st, 2008.

The Max Planck Society is an equal opportunity employer.
