Meeting Description:

The Fourth International Conference on Multimodality (4-ICOM) 'From Print to
Interactive Digital Media: Technology, Multimodal Representation and Knowledge'
is hosted by the Multimodal Analysis Lab, Interactive Digital Media Institute
(IDMI), National University of Singapore and will take place on 30 July - 1
August 2008 .

4-ICOM will bring together leading international scholars from different
disciplines to explore the ways in which technology enables and constrains the
ways in which we construct knowledge and enact social relations, with a special
focus on multimodality, multimodal analysis and interactive digital media. The
aim is to explore the functions of language, visual imagery, 3D objects and
space, sound, music and so forth, and to develop interdisciplinary approaches
for understanding how these resources integrate to create meaning in digital
media. Questions which arise include the following. What is the relationship
between technology, multimodal representation and knowledge? What is the role
of visualization and other semiotic resources today? How is digital media
changing our view of the world and each other? What digital literacies are
required today? What are the implications for the humanities, social sciences,
sciences and education?

4-ICOM will be run in conjunction with the International Symposium on Electric
Arts (ISEA2008) in Singapore, a world premiere media arts event for the critical
discussion and showcase of creative productions applying new technologies in
interactive and digital media.

We will announce further details about 4-ICOM and the first call for papers very
soon.

Best regards, Kay O'Halloran (On behalf of 4-ICOM Scientific Committee)
