The conference on Language, Communication and Cognition aims to promote an
interdisciplinary, comparative, multi-methodological approach to the study of
language, communication and cognition, informed by method and practice as
developed in Cognitive Linguistics. The objective is to contribute to our
understanding of language as a key aspect of human cognition, using converging
and multi-disciplinary methodologies, based upon cross-linguistic,
cross-cultural, and cross-population comparisons.

The conference will address the following themes: 
- Language, creativity and imagination
- Language in use
- Meaning and grammar
- Communication, conceptualisation and gesture
- Language and its influence on thought
- Language acquisition and conceptual development
- Origins and evolution of language and mind

Keynote Speakers
The following distinguished scholars will be giving keynote lectures relating to
the conference themes:

Adele Goldberg, Princeton University
Sotaro Kita, Birmingham University

Theme Sessions
In addition to a General Session and a Poster Session, there will be 6
specially-convened theme sessions, with specially invited discussants.  These
are as follows:  

1. The socio-cultural, cognitive and neurological bases of metaphor
Discussants: George Lakoff and Vyv Evans
2. Cognitive and social processes in language use
Discussants: Herbert Clark and Paul Hopper
3. Constructional approaches to grammar and first language acquisition
Discussants: Adele Goldberg and Eve Clark
4. The role of gesture in communication and cognition
Discussants: Sotaro Kita and Alan Cienki
5. The social and cognitive bases of language evolution
Discussants: Chris Sinha and Michael Tomasello
6. Linguistic relativity: Evidence and methods

Submission of abstracts
Submissions are solicited for the general session, the theme sessions, and the
poster session. The abstract guidelines for all sessions are as follows:

- Abstracts should not exceed 500 words - references are excluded from this count
- Abstracts should clearly indicate a presentation title
- Abstracts should be anonymous for purposes of blind peer-review 
- Abstracts should be formatted as Word, RTF or PDF documents
- Abstracts should be submitted electronically to LCC at brighton.ac.uk

Please include the following information in the main body of your email:
- title and name of author(s)
- affiliation 
- email address for correspondence
- presentation title 
- 3-5 keywords 
- preferred session for presentation: either general session, poster session, or
theme session (please specify theme session number or title)

Meeting Description

The Second Conference on Language, Discourse and Cognition (CLDC-2) will be held
on May 17-18, 2008 on the main campus of National Taiwan University, Taipei,
Taiwan. Over the past decades, interest in how language is used has become more
and more fundamental to theories in functional and cognitive linguistics. The
aim of this conference is to bring together researchers interested in cognition,
semantics and discourse properties of language to exchange research findings and
foster the development of research in these areas. We welcome contributions to
all aspects of language study, with a special focus on the interface of
discourse, language and cognition. 

Call for Papers

Submissions are cordially welcome in all areas related to language, discourse
and cognition. Specifically, we invite abstracts including, but not limited to,
the following fields:
- Cognitive Semantics
- Cognitive Pragmatics

Form of Presentation:
Each paper will be allotted thirty minutes (20 minutes for presentation plus 10
minutes for discussion). 

Submission Guidelines:
Abstracts should be written in English. They are limited to one A4 pages in
12-point font with 1'' margins, including references. Data and examples may be
included in a separate page if necessary. Abstracts should be formatted as
MS-WORD files (in ASCII) and must be anonymous. Please attach a separate page
containing the following information: 
1. author's name in Chinese and English 
2. author's affiliation and title in Chinese and English
3. author's e-mail address, telephone and fax numbers
4. title of paper in English
5. three to five keywords
An author may submit at most one single and one joint abstract. In the case of
joint authorship, one e-mail address should be designated for communication with
CLDC-2. 

Submissions should describe original and unpublished work and should not be
under review elsewhere. They will be reviewed according to their relevance to
the conference theme, clarity of presentation, novelty of idea, and expected
impact on future research within the area of focus. Notification of acceptance
will be sent by March 10, 2008. Abstract submissions or requests regarding the
conference should be addressed to Miss Ren-feng Duann at cldc2008 at ntu.edu.tw or
d94142001 at ntu.edu.tw.
