Meeting Description

The 34th 'Incontro di Grammatica Generativa' will be organized by the University
of Padova (Department of Linguistics, Communication and Performing Arts, via
beato Pellegrino 1) and will take place on February 21 - 23, 2008. The
conference venue is: Palazzo del Bo, via 8 febbraio, 2- Aula Nievo (Cortile
Antico). 

The 34th 'Incontro di Grammatica Generativa' will be organized by the
University of Padova (Department of Linguistics, Communication and
Performing Arts, via beato Pellegrino 1) and will take place on February
21 - 23, 2008. The conference venue is: Palazzo del Bo, via 8 febbraio, 2
- Aula Nievo (Cortile Antico).

Submissions are invited for papers in any field related to the formal study of
grammar. Authors are asked to submit their abstracts as e-mail attachments in
pdf or rtf format to the following address:

conference.igg34 at unipd.it

The abstract should include the title, but not the author's name(s). The title
of the paper, name of the author(s), affiliation(s), surface mail address and
e-mail address should be included in the e-mail message. Abstracts should be no
longer than two pages in length (including examples and references), in 12-point
type, single line spacing and 2.5 cm. margins. Students are invited to specify
their status, as a quota will be reserved for them. People submitting a paper
will not be included in the selection committee. Members of the organizing
committee will refrain from submission.

Admission is free, except for members of the organizing Department, and
everybody is welcome to attend. The official languages of the conference will be
Italian and English.

Deadline for submission: December 1st, 2007.
Notification of acceptance will be no later than January 15th, 2008.

Meeting Description

The 3rd Northern Englishes Workshop aims to bring together researchers who are
working varieties of English spoken in the north of the British Isles. The north
of England, Scotland and Ireland are included within the remit of NEW and papers
are welcomed from all areas of linguistics and from all theoretical
perspectives. An integral part of NEW is the involvement of postgraduate
students: NEW 3 will host a number of workshop session aimed specifically at
interested postgraduates. 

The European Studies Research Institute and the Linguistics Research Centre at
the University of Salford are pleased to announce that the 3rd Northern
Englishes Workshop will be held on March 27th-28th 2008 at The Old Fire Station,
University of Salford (Peel Park campus - http://www.salford.ac.uk/travel/).

Abstracts pertaining to Northern varieties - of no more than one side of A4
including title, references, name(s) of author(s) and affiliation - are invited,
and may be from any area of linguistics. Continuing the tradition of previous
Northern Englishes Workshops, submissions on Scottish and Irish varieties are
welcomed.  

Please submit abstracts to P.Tipton at salford.ac.uk by 7th December 2007.   
Decisions on abstracts will be communicated by 21st December 2007. 

The 3rd Northern Englishes Workshop will have an interdisciplinary theme and we
are therefore delighted to announce the following plenary speaker:

Dr Gaynor Bagnall (School of English, Sociology, Politics and Contemporary
History, University of Salford) who will speak on the following topic

Social class and the performance of 'being Northern' in narratives of identity
and belonging

Postgraduate workshops

On the afternoon of 27th March, a number of postgraduate workshops will be held.
It is anticipated that the following sessions will be offered (more may be made
available according to demand):

Theoretical approaches to syntactic variation in the speech community (Graeme
Trousdale, University of Edinburgh)

Do we still need dialectology? (Joan Beal, University of Sheffield)

Sociophonetics: more than the sum of its parts? (Kevin Watson, Lancaster University)

How to get published in a linguistics journal (Diane Blakemore, University of
Salford)
