Level: PhD

Duties: Research,Project Work

Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics; Phonetics; Text/Corpus Linguistics

Description:

Applications are invited for a PhD position in Trondheim. The research will
focus on non-segmental properties of conversational speech, both for specific
languages and cross-linguistically. For this purpose, spontaneous and controlled
corpora will be collected. The position is part of Sound to Sense (S2S), an EU
project investigating Fine Phonetic Detail from a phonetic, a psycholinguistic
and a speech technological viewpoint (see http://www.sound2sense.eu/projects,
Project 1). The PhD student will be primarily based at the Department of
Language and Communication Studies, but also cooperate with speech technology
specialists at the Department of Telecommunications and Electronics, NTNU. Since
the aim of the S2S project is cross-disciplinary training, the successful
candidate will be expected to spend up to 30% of the project period in one or
more partner institutes and to participate in the network's dedicated workshops.

The prospective candidate has a sound phonetic background as well as experience
with or an interest in speech technology/signal processing. He/she should not be
a Norwegian citizen (for details, see
http://www.sound2sense.eu/vacancy/who-can-apply). Native knowledge of English or
Norwegian would be appreciated but is not required.

Salary is competitive and supplemented with a personal budget for hardware and
travel. Besides a combination of phonetic and engineering research communities,
Trondheim offers a rich cultural life and plenty opportunities for outdoor
activities in beautiful environments.

To apply, please send a CV including nationality and country of residence as
well as a statement of your research interests to Wim van Dommelen (email listed
below) and copies of these to Naomi Hilton at soundsen at hermes.cam.ac.uk . Please
also ask 2 referees to email a reference to Wim van Dommelen and Naomi Hilton.

Application deadline: 31 October 2007, but later applications will be considered
if the position is still open.
