Dear colleagues,

The Department of English Studies at the University of Alicante will teach
this year the 3rd edition of the Online Course in English-Spanish Legal
Translation.

Course details: 
? The course is taught online through the learning platform (virtual
campus) of the University of Alicante. 
? The sessions are based on learning resources developed by the organizers,
consisting of both written material (the book "El inglés jurídico" by
Enrique Alcaraz Varó and the English-Spanish legal dictionary by Alcaraz
and Hughes, which will be sent to all students) and online material (study
guide with vocabulary exercises and translations, with footnotes and
suggestions for translation). 
Learning objectives and course content 
The general purpose of the Course in English-Spanish Legal Translation,
consisting of 25 compulsory and 8 credits (equivalent to 250 and 80 hours,
respectively) is the providing theoretical and practical training in legal
translation from English into Spanish for graduates in English Studies,
Modern Languages, or other university degrees (provided they possess a
sufficient knowledge of both English and Spanish). The specific objectives
are: 
? Acquiring a basic knowledge of the English legal system and the main
problems in legal translation; 
? Analyzing the main legal genres (judgments, contracts, statutes?);
? Practicing the main translation strategies; 
? Translating medium- and high-difficulty legal texts in English into Spanish. 

The syllabus is the following: 
Unit 1: An introduction to translation
Unit 2: An introduction to legal translation 
Unit 3: The language of English law 
Unit 4: Organization of English justice 
Unit 5: Criminal procedure 
Unit 6: Civil procedure 
Unit 7: Contract law: sale and purchase agreements 
Unit 8: Contract law: lease agreements 
Unit 9: Contract law: labor agreements 
Unit 10: Company law 
Unit 11: Inheritance and family law 
Unit 12: Arbitration law 
Unit 13: Insurance law 
Unit 14: EU law 
Unit 15: Lawyers and representation before the courts 

For those interested, there is an optional 8-credit module focusing on the
translation of American legal texts, with the following units:
Unit 16: The language of US law: the Constitution and the Supreme Court 
Unit 17: The language of US law: civil procedure 
Unit 18: The language of US law: criminal procedure 
Unit 19: The language of US law: company and banking law

Course information:
- Number of hours: 250 hours (compulsory) + 80 hours (optional)
- Duration of studies: From November 2, 2007 to June 7, 2008.
- Course fees:
Option 1 (25 credits) 1,250 euros
Option 2 (33 credits) 1,600 euros
Option 3 (only for those who have already completed the compulsory part and
would like to study the US law module) 400 euros 

Important notice: 
The course requires an approximate number of 250 hours of individual work
and study, equivalent to 15 hours per week.
