University (AVRUG).

Topic of debate:
In the multilingual environment of North Africans in Africa and the Diaspora,
the different languages in use do not have the same sociolinguistic status or
the same sociocultural functions. In this debate the following central questions
will be discussed: What varieties make up the language repertoires of the North
Africans, and what attitudes do they hold about these varieties? Which role do
these varieties and attitudes play in the negotiation and construction of their
identities, which includes relations to ideology, history and power? How can
specific interactive resources empower minorities socially and politically? How
migration enhances the exclusion of minorities from the core/decision positions
of the social interactive space? How to approach the construction of inequality
in multilingual contexts, such as multilingual classrooms, workspaces, ect?

Venue:
Panoramische Zaal Lange Kruisstraat 6 (Top Floor), 9000 Gent
Thursday, 8 November 2007, 20.00h
