Software developer - Documentation archive at ELAR, SOAS (London)
Fixed term 3 years
GBP 29,527 - GBP 35,644 p.a. Inclusive of London Allowance

The Endangered Languages Archive (ELAR) is looking to recruit a Software
Developer. The successful candidate will develop and extend ELAR's
information systems, and will provide software, training and related
services to depositors and other archive users. Key skills should be in
software development (including MySQL, PHP or equivalent, XML) with
considerable emphasis on determining and meeting users' needs.

ELAR is a small team that is building a leading, innovative digital archive
committed to the preservation of digital language resources and the
maintenance of endangered languages. ELAR is part of the Hans Rausing
Endangered Languages Project, along with the Endangered Languages Academic
Programme and the Endangered Languages Documentation Programme.

You should be team-oriented and have the ability to work with a wide range
of people. Training experience will be an advantage. The post commences on
7 January 2008 or as soon as possible thereafter. 

Annual leave is 30 days per year plus statutory and bank holidays. USS
pension scheme will be available.

Job Description:

Job Title: Software Developer 
Department:  Endangered Languages Archive (Linguistics)
Salary Scale: Academic-Related 2/3, plus GBP 2,134 p.a. London Allowance
Tenure:  3 years fixed term
Reporting to: Director, Endangered Languages Archive
Purpose of Job: To develop and maintain ELAR's information systems, to
develop software to support ELAR's clients, and to assist in providing
training.

Main Activities and Responsibilities:

1.  In consultation with the Director of ELAR, to develop and extend the
Archive Information System, including metadata management and secure access
facilities
2.  Maintain and develop web-based services, such as dynamic web content
3.  Provide software and advice to ELAR's depositors and other archive users
4.  Participate in ELAR projects including web and multimedia development
5.  Participate in training activities offered by ELAR and HRELP
6.  Keep up to date with issues in digital archiving and in endangered
languages through activities including engagement with the relevant communities
7.  Other activities corresponding to particular skills of the post-holder
