Description:

The Natural Language Processing Group at the Stanford Computer Science
Department is looking for an NLP Senior Software Engineer to work on the
Stanford Intellectual Property Clearinghouse project. 

The goal of the Stanford IP Clearinghouse project is to address the broken
US Patent System by creating a publicly accessible database of all
Intellectual Property documents and building a specialized Semantic Search
Engine on top of it. The project will benefit individual inventors,
high-tech and bio-tech companies involved in technology transfer, patent
policy makers, and legal professionals. 

NLP Corpus:

- Large collection of textual documents of multiple types (patents,
licensing docs, technical standards and statutes to name a few)
- Intellectual Property domain provides rich embedded structure within
documents
- Many-to-many relationships between different document types induces
additional structure

A few words on the Stanford Intellectual Property Clearinghouse: 

- CS Professor Chris Manning is a technical adviser
- We are creating a comprehensive database of all Intellectual Property
documents  
- This database has never been created before
- We will build a Semantic Search Engine on top of it
- Project will help to fix the broken US patent system and facilitate
technology transfer 
- Intel, Oracle, Cisco, Genentech, SAP and other tech companies are funding
the effort
- Currently we have ~ $3 million in funding
- There will be an opportunity for commercial spin-offs (startups)

Responsibilities:

The candidate will work with Professor Chris Manning on the Stanford
Intellectual Property Clearinghouse project. The main responsibility of the
NLP Senior Software Engineer is to implement the NLP system for the project. 

Specific responsibilities:

- Architect NLP system for the Stanford Intellectual Property Clearinghouse 
- Architect individual NLP modules that will comprise the system
- Implement individual NLP modules
- Implement the large-scale NLP system for the Stanford IP Clearinghouse
project
- Provide technical direction to the project

Qualifications:

The ideal candidate must have a PhD or MS in Computer Science in the field
of Natural Language Processing or Computational Linguistics. Candidate must
also have 7+ years of work experience in building large-scale Natural
Language Processing systems. 

Skill set should include:

- Expert knowledge of Natural Language Processing field
- Expert knowledge of Machine Learning techniques and algorithms (examples
include Large Margin Classifiers, Mixture Models, EM, Approximate
Inference, Sampling Methods, etc.)
- Expert knowledge of Statistical AI and Graphical Models (examples include
Bayesian Networks, Markov Random Fields, HMM, CRF, etc...)
- Knowledge of Semi-supervised Machine Learning algorithms and
bootstrapping techniques  
- Expert programming skills in Java (8 - 10 yrs of programming experience)
- Expert knowledge of design and architecture of large-scale NLP systems
written in Java
- Experience with rapid development of large-scale NLP systems written in Java
- Self-starter; ability to co-ordinate large software development projects
