Meeting Description: 

The seminar will focus on the role of cognition in theoretical and applied
terminology studies. The identification, analysis, recording and processing of
terminological units will be discussed from the cognitive perspective. Special
attention will be given to:

• Terminology, sense making, meaning, development
• The role of terminological units in cognition
• The role of terminology in a transitional process of understanding
• Theoretical views on cognition and conceptualisation and terminology
• Methods of cognitive analysis applied in multilingual terminology projects
• Wat the discipline of terminology can learn from interdisciplinary studies of
cognition 

The Centrum voor vaktaal en Communicatie of the Erasmushogeschool Brussel and
the Centre de recherché en linguistique appliquée of the Institut supérieur de
traducteurs et interprètes (Haute École de Bruxelles) have the pleasure of
inviting you to a seminar on terminology and cognition. The seminar will take
place on the 16th of May 2008 at the Department of Applied Linguistics of the
Erasmushogeschool Brussel (Trierstraat 84, 1040 Brussel).

Cognition is a continuously evolving process which relates present perceptions
and knowledge via reflection to potential further perceptions and insights. The
role of language in this process has been studied from several perspectives. In
terminology theory the perspective is the terminological unit. Conscious
reflections on the distinction between generalization and contextualizing in
determining the  difference between core meaning and various senses of a
terminological unit is believed to be part and parcel of cognitive processing.
It is also part and parcel of terminological analysis.

The seminar will feature presentations in English and French. The speakers at
this one-day event are:

Best practices and experiences will be shared regarding e.g. research into
metaphors, the dynamic nature of cognition and the role of language and
semantics therein, terminological variation, etc. Proposals for new approaches
in the development of multilingual terminology resources and in terminology
teaching will be discussed.
