The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

University or Organization: Universitaet Leipzig
Department: Institut fuer Linguistik
Job Location: Leipzig, Sachsen, Germany
Web Address: http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~asw

Job Rank: Researcher

Specialty Areas: Morphology

Required Language(s): Algic

Description:

Two positions are available in the research project 'Hierarchy Effects in
Kiranti and Broader Algic', funded by the DFG (German Research Foundation).
The positions start October 1, 2008 (or later) and last three years. The
first position is a full-time post-doctoral 13 TV-L researcher position.
The second position is a half-time 13 TV-L/2 position. Applicants for the
second position must have an MA in hand and are expected to carry out
research for their dissertation in the project. Applicants for both
positions should have expertise in a significant subset of the following
areas: Current morphological theories (e.g., Distributed Morphology,
Word-and-Paradigm approaches), Optimality Theory, animacy hierarchy effects
in morphology and syntax, and the representation of linguistic data in
database systems.

Project description: The goal of the project is to broaden the empirical
and theoretical understanding of animacy hierarchy effects in polysynthetic
agreement systems by in-depth studies and the theoretical modelling of
morphological microvariation in two language families: Algic and Kiranti.
The guiding assumption is that low-level morphological variation provides
crucial diagnostics for the formal nature of these effects. Since verbal
inflectional paradigms are the major empirical basis of the project, a
methodological goal of the project is to develop methods of storing
morphological paradigms in data bases which explicitly represent
morphological relations inside and across paradigms. More information is
available at http://www.uni-leipzig.de/~jtrommer/Hierarchies.pdf

Applications via email are strongly encouraged. Applicants should send a CV
and one or two papers (only pdf files) to Jochen Trommer.
