The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use
non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge
that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity,
nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we
have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding
employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international
employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobs/jobnet.html. This page has been set
up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Job Rank: Full Professor

Specialty Areas: General Linguistics; Historical Linguistics

Required Language(s): English (eng)

Description:

The Faculty of Philosophy at the University of Mannheim invites
applications for a Professorship (W3) in English Linguistics with a
teaching load of 10-12 hours per week. The earliest possible starting point
is the beginning of the spring term in February 2009.

While the postholder is expected to be able to represent the field of
English linguistics in its entirety, the department specifically encourages
applicants with a strong interest in linguistic theory and in the history
of English. Experience with successful grant applications would be an
asset. The Faculty also values teaching qualifications very highly.

The new faculty member is expected to give seminars and lectures in various
study programs, including the interdisciplinary BA program Culture and
Economics and MA programs currently in development, for example 'Language,
Media, Communication' and 'Culture and Economics'. The postholder is
further expected to take part in student selection and in the
interdisciplinary PhD program in the faculty.

Employment is conditional on an outstanding PhD dissertation and additional
academic achievements, i.e. a second thesis ('Habilitation') or equivalent
academic qualifications. The latter could also have been obtained outside
academia.

We refer applicants to the requirements of Section 47 LHG of the federal
state of Baden-Württemberg for details. The position is full-time and
permanent. For applicants currently holding non-professorial positions, the
initial contract may be limited to three years.

The University of Mannheim is dedicated to student mentoring and expects
the candidate to be regularly present on campus and to move to the Mannheim
area. As an equal opportunity employer, the University strives to increase
the proportion of female staff in research and teaching. We particularly
encourage qualified women to apply. Severely challenged persons will be
given preference in case of equal qualifications.

Please send your application including a CV, copies of degrees, a list of
publications and teaching experience as a pdf-file. Please address your
application to the Dean of the Faculty of Philosophy at the University of
Mannheim, Prof. Dr. Johannes Paulmann at the application email listed below.
