Research Associate Latin Linguistics

In the framework of the Excellence Research Cluster 264 "TOPOI - The
Formation and Transformation of Space and Knowledge in Ancient
Civilizations," Freie Universität Berlin, Department of Historical and
Cultural Studies, the following full-time, two-year position is to be
filled starting November 1, 2008: Research Associate (Pay Level Group: II a
BAT [federal employees collective wage agreement] in the form of the
collective wage agreement used at the Freie Universität Berlin).

Job Description
Collaboration in Researcher Group C I 1 "Languages" and C II "Images" in
Excellence Cluster 264 "Topoi - The Formation and Transformation of Space
and Knowledge in Ancient Civilizations."

Requirements for Employment
Completed Masters, Magister, Dilplom, or Staatsexamen in the field of Latin
Studies (with linguistic emphasis), Romance Linguistics, Comparative
Linguistics, or Indo-European Linguistics.

Additional Desiderata for Employment
Very good doctorate in the field of Latin Studies (with linguistic
emphasis), Romance Linguistics, Comparative Linguistics, or Indo-European
Linguistics with very good knowledge of Classical and Late Classical Latin.
Familiarity with relevant linguistic approaches (for example, Historical
Linguistics, Typology, Corpus Linguistics, Psycholinguistics) is desirable.

Expected Future Work
An independent research contribution to the thematic emphasis "Latin
spatial expressions and concepts in a diachronic perspective." Active
interest in interdisciplinary collaboration within the Research Groups
"Languages" and "Images" and in collaboration in interdisciplinary
colloquia of the Excellence Cluster TOPOI. The research project "Latin
spatial expressions and concepts in a diachronic perspective" will focus on
an analysis of significant morphological, syntactic, and semantic phenomena
of the linguistic coding of spatial relations and dimensions in the Latin
language. The study of suitable partial bodies of Early Latin, Classical
Latin, and Late Latin literature is imaginable, as is a contrasting
analysis of the Latin and selected Romance languages with a focus on Latin.
In regard to the interdisciplinary investigation of culturally-specific
spatial concepts and cognitions, the project should offer perspectives for
comparative linguistic and diachronic questions. Thus, within the Research
Group "Languages" of Research Area C ("Perception and Representation"),
various ancient languages (for example, Ancient Egyptian, Coptic, Sumerian,
Akkadian, Hittite, Hurrite, Ancient Greek, etc.) will be examined for their
spatial expressions. The project will also engage in direct exchange with
an image-science research project on two- and three-dimensional depictions
of space in Graeco-Roman culture within the Research Group "Images."
